Owing to the natural beauty and artistic
and architectural qualities of sandstone, it is used for walls, garden
decoratives, flooring and handicrafts. It is a soft stone that was a
favorite of early Mughals including Akbar. The architectural marvels
of his reign including Fatehpur Sikri, Qutub Minar and Red fort are
sandstone masterpieces.
Being a soft stone it is easy to carve. It is an outdoors stone.
Sandstone benches, lamps and sculptures can be seen adorning the
gardens. It is considered a stone suitable for pavements and
floorings. Sandstone handicrafts including garden lamps, sandstone
bird baths, and other decoratives are gaining popularity.
Rajasthan is the largest sandstone producer in India. Madhya Pradesh
is second in line. These states are known for sandstone quarries and
sandstone crafts. Other sand stone producing states of India are
Bihar, Gujrat, Karnataka, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Andra Pradesh, Assam and
Meghalaya.
Sand stone is available in different color with slight property
difference. Different varieties are Kandla Gray, Rajpura Green,
Lalitpur Yellow, Dholpur-Beige, Dholpur Pink, Agra Red.
